Hanging up the microphone. Been doing the play-by-play since the 2000-2001 season for the Cats. |

Just saw the news on twitter. He definitely had his own unique style.. I hope he can make some visits to the 'booth' and do some color. |

Now, who will let the dog in/out? Great run by a wonderful man. _________________ All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for men of good will to do nothing. Eddie Burke

Drat, I loved him. If I wanted professionals, I would root for chapel hill. Plus fond memories of dial up Internet, the team line lounge, and the some of the more extreme and frustrating lengths we used to go to listen to away games. Note listen- as we were only on tv 5 times a year. With the advent of iPads, the A10 network, and multiple video options I listened to him less than 5 times last year. I think my last great kilgo moment was the Gibbs explosion at Charlotte when I was in Mexico no where near a tv or internet, but decided to pay for international roaming and pray my battery didn’t run out. _________________ If anyone disagrees with anything I say, I am quite prepared not only to retract it, but also to deny under oath that I ever said it |

Before I retired I listened to games on the car radio during my local travels, especially during daylight hours when the signal had more coverage area. _________________ Μεγάλη ἡμÎÏα εἶναι ΛÏγξ |

His halftime interviews included Steph (several times), Lebron at the NCSU game, and Lefty. I'll bet he tried to interview Denzel Washington during the Columbia game several years ago. Mark Plemmons, long-time sports and feature writer for the Concord-Kannapolis Independent Tribune and sometime Davidson play-by-play announcer (he called the Wildcats' NCAA baseball run in 2017) wrote of Kilgo: "John Kilgo is another favorite. I had a great opportunity to work with him a few years ago. He has a unique style and great wit. He is the best sports talk host I have ever heard. He argues just enough but in a way that you can’t be mad at him even if you disagree." _________________ "We should've thrown our number 7 pitcher against Davidson......" Eh, those Ivy League schools are all the same (except for Princeton, the Davidson of the North). _________________ "We should've thrown our number 7 pitcher against Davidson......" Post by Tar Heel baseball fan 16 minutes into the game. |

Kilgo hosted the Dean Smith Show on Sundays during basketball season. The show was filmed on Saturday night or Sunday morning. The low man on the totem pole of the UNC staff was paid extra by the stations that ran the show to drive the tapes to a central location in the western part of the state so they could pick up their copy. Roy Williams was the designated driver in the late '70s and early '80s.
Kilgo and Dean commented on highlights of the Heels' games that showed them winning 48-4 and then interviewed a player or an assistant coach. Classical Gas by Mason Williams was usually played during the highlights. |

Adding Kilgo to the broadcasting team when we did added much credibility to Davidson's reputation. Kilgo had been the first SID at Davidson in the '60s. He was a UNC alum and had been part of their broadcasting team for many years. He was an announcer for UNCC in the 1970's and had been on Charlotte radio and in print for decades.
He knew Lefty, Homer Smith, Dick Tomey, and President Martin and did not resist dropping their names frequently when he was on the air. |
