#578 @ #486 ( we jumped from #562). 71%. 21-78. They played Campbell already, losing 26-49.

Big, impressive roster: https://gocuhawks.com/roster.aspx?roster=207&path=football

One used to be able to buy tee shirts at the CPCC Bookstore that said, "University of Charlotte on 'Lizabeth Avenue". UCLA were underlined.

That was in the mid-late 1980s.

Eli Whitney, NC is on NC 87 about 2 miles north of the Chatham line in Alamance Co. Whitney recently obtained a Family Dollar to go with it's long time fixtures: Ray's Quick Stop, Davis' service station, Tri-County Vet Services (my brother's practice), and a volunteer fire station. Life is good.

Eli Whitney is located on State Road 1005, too. It's the back way from Greensboro to Chapel Hill. In the days when Choo Choo Justice was toting the pigskin down the field, Highway 70 through Greensboro and Burlington was clogged with fans driving to Chapel Hill and Durham.

A temporary solution was to connect several roads through the country that ran from Greensboro to Chapel Hill. The route was given the same number across 3 counties. The route had a rebirth from 1973 to the late '80s when speed limits on the interstates were reduced to 55 mph.

It is a pretty drive through the country. There are several Quaker Meeting Houses from the 1700s along the way. The community of Snow Camp is on the route, too. It's famous for being the hometown of MLB player Floyd Wicker.

The part about Highway 70 being clogged on football Saturdays is credited to seamac77.

When I see the sign in Cherryville, I sometimes picture a courtroom in a passenger train car.

I once attended an outdoor drama in Snow Camp. I think it was "The Dark of the Moon," or something like that. I know I didn't see their signature play.

Snow Camp is so named because Cornwallis camped there after the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. It snowed on them (in March). There are a bunch of British soldiers buried at the Quaker Church (Cane Creek Friends' Meeting I think).

The main production is called "The Sword of Peace."

A baseball trivia exercise to name the best MLB player for each letter of the alphabet sometimes ends in southern Alamance- local Tom Zachary was an accomplished pitcher. I guess he was better than Richie Zisk or Gus Zernial.

Zachary played at Guilford and is best known for giving up Babe Ruth's 60th HR.

His 1st season with the Philadelphia Athletics he played under a fake name so he could play for Guilford again. He went to WWI. When he returned he didn't need the fake name any longer.

In 1929 as a Yankee he went 12-0. This is a record for the most wins in a season without a loss.
