Glad I wasn't drinking coffee when I read that. I wonder if they're still in business or if they have gone digital.

If tests reflect standards and teachers are driven by standards, then what teachers really mean by "teaching to the test" is that they can't teach cool stuff that is unrelated to the curriculum. Teachers should just say that. Now, there are probably some merits to teaching "cool stuff" and I agree with you that you don't want politicians meddling into state standards. But teachers do need standards to drive instruction.

Looking back on my lackluster academic career, most of the really important things I learned from various professors had nothing to do with the curriculum as stated in the catalog.

Later on, when my own teaching history was still recent, every time I met a former student who mentioned learning something from me, it also had nothing to do with the curriculum.

I appreciate one end of year standardized assessment that helps me reflect on my practice. I can look at the results and think about what I did well and not as well. I assess my students all the time at the teacher-level- it helps me to figure out what students know and don't know so I can adjust my teaching accordingly. Sometimes, my students are learning while they are being assessed. It's not just sitting and bubbling. We should be thoughtful and intentional about assessment- and that includes how much standardized assessment students are asked to complete.

As for evaluating music teachers- again- I see all of this as a shell game for removing bad teachers. We remove the teachers who we always wanted to remove because of the data. If we like the teachers and their data is bad, we keep the teacher anyway. If the purpose of the assessment is teacher evaluation we are wasting time.

We've had such a successful history of selling beer at sporting events in Ohio. What could possibly go wrong?

The Who at Riverfront Coliseum circa 1979 ended Festival Seating in Ohio. I have no idea if alcohol contributed to the disaster.

Nah, the disco deal was in Chicago. An Eddie Gaedel idea gone wrong.
