If one looks at the Kenpom data from the other thread, there were 4 P5/Big East programs ranked behind Davidson from '97-'19. They were Oregon State, DePaul, Rutgers, and Washington State.

If Sam understands what Kenpom is, maybe that will be important to him.

Best for us if Sam lays off both kenpom and the majority of citycat's posts (except those related to Wash St- he can read all of those).

Evan Nelson Top 3 does not include Davidson. One would figure we were done with guards for 2020. Nice list for him.

Per Verbal Commits, Cincinnati and WSU each have 23 offers out to HS seniors. UC has one commit. WSU doesn’t have any. I hope that means they have guys they want more than they want Sam. St Joe’s has 9 offers on the table and 1 commit. St. Mary’s has only 4 offers shown with one commit.

With St. Mary’s success with Australians, and their west coast locale, they may be our toughest comp for a Kiwi.

WFTC mentions Sam Avery '77 as the most recent Sam signed by Davidson to be a hoopster. Sam was a freshman in '73-'74. None of the freshmen played in a varsity game that season. Davidson had a jayvee team and Sam played on it.

In '74-'75, Sam played in some varsity games. He had a key defensive play late in Davidson's win over VMI on the road. The game ended similarly to the road win at Virginia in '73-'74. Sam has no stats listed on Davidson's college basketball reference page, but is listed among Davidson's lettermen in '74-'75 in the media guide.

Sam did not return for what would have been his junior year. A much ballyhooed (credit to seamac77 for that adjective) freshman class, the Super Six, entered in '75-'76 and many of the varsity players were told their services were no longer required. He transferred to UNC-Chapel Hill. Some of us played pickup games with and against him in '77-'78 in Woollen Gym.

He was similar in size and skills to Marvin Lively '77. Marvin stayed at Davidson and played a lot as a junior and started as a senior on the Iron Five.

We need a Sam to make a major impact.

Here's that jayvee team. Nine freshmen, two sophomores.

That's some impressive hair on some of them, but overall it pales in comparison to that year's varsity.

I'm probably wrong, but my understanding was that we brought in a mix of signees and preferred walk-ons that season. Seven of them in all -- the six players in the front row, plus the 2nd player from the right in the back row.

Sam Avery is #24. He was 6'4 or so, a good 2" taller than #30, but he's kinda slumped down in this photo.

I'd forgotten how many recruited players and preferred walkons there were on that team. Marvin Lively and Jerry Stallworth were the only guys remaining in the program as seniors.

There's no truth to the rumor that #34, Dave Wolter, left to join the Hanson brothers on the Charleston Chiefs.

Sam Mennenga breaks down his top 5 here (if, unlike me, you have a subscription)

If anyone does have a 247 subscription I'd definitely *not* appreciate you copy and pasting the article and PMing it to me. :D

Here's a short passage quoted on a WSU message board:

"Between Basketball Without Borders and the FIBA u19 World Cup, 247Sports has had multiple opportunities to evaluate Mennenga over the last several months and the New Zealander made his way to the States for another viewing this week. Mennenga is a versatile forward who may not be elite in any single area, but positively impacts the game in so many ways that it is hard to not appreciate his game. He can hit shots from the perimeter, attacks the basket, plays extremely hard, rebounds on both ends and is a versatile defender."

Is that Gothic R for Rutgers, Richmond, Rice, Rider, or Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute?
"We were in the center ring the whole night,'' longtime Davidson coach Bob McKillop said. ''We were not on the ropes. We were not on the mat. We were in the center ring slugging away, and we just ran out of time.''

Rice. He took an official there shortly after we offered.

Whatever Rice did to end up in athletic purgatory was unspeakably horrible. Similar to some of the stuff Delta House did. SMU received the death penalty and TCU was put on probation in the late '80s, too, but both ended up better off than Rice when the SWC expired.

The list of NCAA programs whose names start with "R" is not overly impressive.

Rhode Island. I have to admit, I was on the Rhode Island bandwagon the year Tom Penders was coaching and they made a run in March. Of course the Wildcats weren't playing basketball anymore that year. Is Rhode Island the best R team?
